How to Transition Your Summer Dresses Into Fall

How to Transition Your Summer Dresses Into Fall

Don’t pack away your favorite summer dresses just yet. A few smart layers, fall textures, and seasonal accessories can take the dresses you already own—or the clearance dresses you’re finding now—right into fall.

As summer winds down, it’s tempting to think our warm-weather dresses have reached the end of their season. But some of the best pieces in a wardrobe can work much harder than that.

Maybe you bought a few vacation dresses for a summer trip and are wondering what to do with them now that you’re home. Or perhaps you’re spotting summer dresses on clearance and wondering whether buying one this late in the season makes sense.

It can—especially when you know how to style it for fall.

For women over 40, transitional dressing doesn’t have to mean buying an entirely new wardrobe every season. Instead, we can take the dresses we already enjoy wearing and give them a completely different feel with knitwear, jackets, boots and richer accessories.

Here are two easy examples.

LOOK 1: Casual & Cozy

Start With a Denim Midi Dress

A denim dress is one of those pieces that naturally bridges summer and fall.

Our starting point is the Button Front Midi Shirt Dress from White House Black Market. Its lightweight denim, midi length and button-front styling make it easy to wear during warmer weather, while the darker denim wash gives it enough visual weight to carry into fall.

In summer, you could easily wear a dress like this with sandals or sneakers. For fall, we change what surrounds it.

Add a Soft Cable-Knit Layer

Layering a poncho over the dress immediately changes the mood.

The Constance Cable Knit Poncho from Altar’d State adds the soft knit texture we associate with fall while allowing the denim dress to remain the foundation of the outfit. I verified that Altar’d State currently lists this exact poncho; however, its searchable site results are currently surfacing it through collection pages rather than giving me a reliable standalone product URL, so I am not going to invent one.

Shop the Constance Cable Knit Poncho at Altar’d State. This is also a useful formula for other summer dresses: dress + lightweight knit = an easy early-fall outfit.

Trade Summer Shoes for Suede Boots

Nothing makes a summer piece feel more appropriate for fall quite as quickly as boots.

The Steve Madden Averee Boot at DSW brings in warm tan suede, a pointed toe and a kitten heel. The warm brown tone works especially well against dark denim. The boots were also recently marked down, which reinforces why the end of summer can be a smart time to look for pieces that work into the next season.

Finish With a Rich Suede Bag

Complete the look with the Michael Kors Christina Large Suede Shoulder Bag in "luggage." The luggage-colored suede ties beautifully into the boots without requiring the two pieces to match exactly. It’s another example of how simply changing the texture and color of your accessories can make a summer dress look much more autumnal.

The formula:
Denim midi dress + cable-knit poncho + tan suede boots + luggage suede bag.

The dress hasn’t changed. The season around it has.

LOOK 2: Polished & Chic

Not every fall transition needs to be casual. A lightweight black summer dress can become a surprisingly polished fall outfit with the right structured layer.

Begin With a Floaty Black Midi Dress

The Kensie Flutter-Sleeve Midi Dress at Macy’s is a great example. The black midi has a V-neck, flutter sleeves and a softly flowing silhouette.

This is exactly the type of dress many women might buy for a vacation, dinner out, summer event or warm-weather evening.

Rather than putting it away after Labor Day, use it as a base layer.

Add a Structured Cream Jacket

The Pinstripe Trench Moto Jacket from White House Black Market changes the personality of the dress almost instantly.

The cream-and-black pinstripe fabric works naturally with the black dress, while the trench-inspired details and self-tie belt introduce more structure. It creates that balance we love for fall: something soft underneath with something tailored over it.

It also demonstrates one of our favorite transitional-style tricks:

You don’t necessarily need a “fall dress.” Sometimes you simply need a fall layer.

Replace Sandals With Black Boots

Next, swap warm-weather footwear for the Circus NY by Sam Edelman Yulia Boots at Zappos. The pointed toe and kitten heel keep the outfit sophisticated rather than heavy, while the knee-high black boot grounds the floaty dress and makes the overall look feel appropriate for cooler weather.

Add a Structured Black Handbag

Finish with a black structured bag. The bag featured in our look is the JW PEI Lucia Classic Top Handle Bag. We located this style through Amazon.

The formula:
Black flutter-sleeve midi dress + cream pinstripe jacket + black knee-high boots + structured black handbag.

The result feels much more like fall without requiring a new dress.

Before You Pass Up Those Summer Clearance Dresses…

This is where transitional dressing can become particularly useful.

Late summer is often when shoppers start seeing clearance dresses, sale dresses and end-of-season fashion. Instead of looking at a summer dress and asking, “How many weeks can I still wear this?” try asking:

“Can I style this into fall?”

Look for dresses that can work with pieces you probably already own—blazers, cardigans, ponchos, denim or leather jackets, loafers and boots.

Darker neutrals, denim, black, navy, cream, olive, burgundy and earthy prints tend to be especially easy to transition. But even lighter dresses can continue into the season when grounded with richer fall colors and textures.

That means a great summer dress on sale may actually have much more life in it than the clearance rack suggests.

What About Your Vacation Dresses?

The same idea applies when you return from a late-summer vacation.

Instead of relegating your vacation dresses to the back of the closet until next year, take another look at them.

Could that sleeveless midi work underneath a blazer?

Could your black dinner dress work with tall boots?

Could a lightweight shirt dress work with a poncho or cardigan?

Could a summer maxi work with a cropped jacket and loafers?

Often, the answer is yes.

And that is the larger idea behind transitional dressing: shop your closet first, then add only what helps your existing wardrobe work harder.

5 Easy Ways to Transition a Summer Dress Into Fall

  1. Add a third layer. Try a blazer, cardigan, poncho, moto jacket or lightweight trench.
  2. Change the shoes. Replace sandals with loafers, ankle boots or knee-high boots.
  3. Introduce fall texture. Suede, leather, cable knit and structured fabrics immediately shift the mood.
  4. Use a richer color palette. Cognac, chocolate brown, camel, black, cream, burgundy, olive and dark denim can make even a lighter-weight dress feel more seasonal.
  5. Don’t overlook end-of-summer sales. When evaluating clearance dresses or sale dresses, think beyond the remaining warm-weather weeks. A versatile dress that works under fall layers can become a much smarter purchase.

The Baylen Lane Takeaway

Transitioning from summer into fall doesn’t have to mean starting over.

For women over 40, we think some of the most useful wardrobes are built around versatile pieces that can change with the season. A favorite summer dress—or even that vacation dress you thought you were finished wearing—may only need a knit layer, a beautiful jacket, boots and a more substantial handbag to feel completely different.

So before packing away your summer wardrobe—or walking past those summer clearance dresses—take another look.

You may already have the foundation of your next fall outfit hanging in your closet.
