How to Paint a Cherry Wood Dining Table
Proper preparation is the key to a beautiful, durable finish.
Step 1 – Clean the Surface
Wash the table thoroughly using a TSP substitute or another degreasing cleaner to remove years of wax, furniture polish, and oils.
Allow the table to dry completely.
Step 2 – Lightly Sand
Lightly sand every surface using 150–220 grit sandpaper.
The goal isn't to remove the original cherry finish completely. Instead, lightly scuff the glossy surface so the primer can properly bond.
Remove all sanding dust with a tack cloth.
Step 3 – Apply a Bonding Primer
Cherry wood naturally contains tannins that can bleed through paint.
Apply a high-quality bonding primer designed for furniture to seal the surface and promote excellent adhesion.
Once dry, lightly sand again using fine-grit sandpaper for an exceptionally smooth finish.
Step 4 – Paint
